I first met Louisiana Red, 1980 in Jack Dupree's flat in Hannover. He was on tour with the "American Blues Festival", and was paying the old man a visit. Not too long after that, Red decided to move to Germany, where the working conditions was much better than in the states. Jack got him a flat in the same apartment building as he lived in, and agent Rolf Schubert got him a whole lot of gigs around Europe.
After that I saw quit a bit of Red, when I was hangin' around Hannover. We also did a lot gigs together and in 1984 we recorded "Rip Off Blues". That's a recording session I never forget! We was actually doing a festival gig in Copenhagen with Champion Jack Dupree, Louisiana Red and Kenn Lending Blues Band. The next day, Red wanted to record with my band and Jack. So we went to the studio, setting up a recording session, and nobody was talking about what to record or anything like that. So the tape started rolling, and Red just went from one song to the other, making up songs on the spot. The recording machine only stopped to change wheel, and inside one hour we had recorded a whole album. We did the mix right away, and Red took the master home, and kept it secret for ten years. The thing of it was, that Red had made up some nasty songs about his wife, his agent and record company, so he was scared to let them hear it! But in 1994 it was finally put out by CMA Music Productions GMBH, which I'm glad of, because I'm really proud of the sound and feeling we made that day.
